Troy Ave is clarifying statements he made on his NuPac mixtape about a possible deal with TDE.
Troy Ave’s word did not look bond a couple weeks ago after it came out that his whole story about almost signing to TDE seemed to be fabricated. On the “Truth Be Told PSA,” Ave ranted for more than 30 minutes about former friends and missed opportunities. In the rant he mentioned that Kendrick Lamar reached out to him while he was in jail with some well wishes. He went on to say that he instructed his manager at the time, Hovain, to reach out to TDE and set a play in motion for him to join their roster. Troy later says that “sh*t just fell through.”
This statement was interpreted by many as Troy saying that TDE wanted to sign him, but that his manager couldn’t close the deal. Then, everyone’s suspicions were confirmed with TDE CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith came out and said that no one in TDE ever talked to anyone in Troy’s camp about a deal.
Now, Troy is out making some clarifications of his own. In an interview with the Los Angeles Leakers, Troy says that he never said that TDE wanted to sign him.
“The good thing about me is the truth don’t change. I never have to double back and change up my story and really explain. I never said [TDE was going to sign me],” Troy said. “I never spoke to anybody at TDE. But I’m sitting in jail, and it come to me, after Kendrick reached out, [I was like] that was real, that was love, that was dope; he didn’t have to do that.”
He says that gesture motivated him to instruct his manager to ask their friend Rob Markman to reach out to someone at TDE. Troy then says that person that they were put in contact with wasn’t down with them at all and he gave up on trying after getting the runaround.
“I put plans in action, and unfortunately I’m sitting in jail and I can’t put no plan in action,” Troy says. “So I’m depending on other people to put the play together, and they couldn’t. I would have no reason to lie.”
