Another day, another cop gets away with murder. The Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Philando Castile has been acquitted of all charges.
Castille’s death was caught on video by his girlfriend, where a cop could be seen shooting Castille despite the victim letting the officer clearly know he was in legal possession of a firearm. Instead, Castile was fired upon as he reached for his wallet.
Reports the New York Times:
The Minnesota police officer who fatally shot Philando Castile during a traffic stop last summer was acquitted Friday of all charges, a decision likely to be perceived by activists as more evidence that officers can kill black people with impunity.
Had he been convicted, the officer, Jeronimo Yanez of the St. Anthony Police Department, would have faced up to 20 years in prison for second-degree manslaughter and endangering safety by discharging a firearm.
The verdict followed the acquittal last month of an Oklahoma police officer who killed an unarmed black man and, of particular interest here, a prosecutor’s decision last year not to charge the Minneapolis officers who killed another black man, Jamar Clark.
This miscarriage of justice comes almost a year after Castile’s death on July 6, 2016.
Refer to this case next time a clown asks you why screaming “Black Lives Matter” is so necessary.
Rest in peace Philando Castile.
