In a bizarre twist in the alleged hate crime attack suffered by Jussie Smollett in Chicago, all charges against the Empire actor have been suddenly dropped Tuesday (March 25). The so-called “Gay Tupac” will no longer face the 16 counts of falsified reports of the crime, and Twitter has all the commentary about the matter.
What follows is a statement from Smollet’s legal team,Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes:
Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him. Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29. He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgment.
“Jussie and many others were hurt by these unfair and unwarranted actions. This entire situation is a reminder that there should never be an attempt to prove a case in the court of public opinion. That is wrong. It is a reminder that a victim, in this case Jussie, deserves dignity and respect. Dismissal of charges against the victim in this case was the only just result.
Reactions to the news have been swift and we’ve collected much of that below.
The Gay Tupac came out riding 😅 he wasn’t letting them take him down 😩— Michael 'Buck' Maris (@buckotb) March 26, 2019

Jussie Smollett getting his 16 felony counts dropped is a prime example of white priv-— Kyle Kashuv (@KyleKashuv) March 26, 2019
Wow it's almost like CPD is just a lie factory who put together a hit squad against a Black man who spoke out against hate. Weird, that.https://t.co/ZPvtgKDTA2— Emily of the State (@EmilyGorcenski) March 26, 2019
The prosecutors didn't refer to community service. They praised Jussie Smollett's contributions to the community of Chicago. https://t.co/a4hngBrtis— Caroline Orr Bueno (@RVAwonk) March 26, 2019

A whole hell of a lot of people need to get out their cookbooks and look up the best recipes for crow.
And a whole hell of a lot more people owe the man a heartfelt apology.
I'm sure the discussion on Twitter dot com today regarding Jussie Smollett and the clearing of charges against him will be nuanced, salient, and purposeful.— Charlotte Clymer 🏳️🌈 (@cmclymer) March 26, 2019
Something tells me that Trump fans won't be so quick to accept the "exoneration" of Jussie Smollett.— Caroline Orr Bueno (@RVAwonk) March 26, 2019
NEWER: The Mayor of Chicago will be making a statement on Jussie Smollett alongside the Chief of Police at Navy Pier today.— Zach Stafford (@ZachStafford) March 26, 2019
This is all so unprecedented.
It was disheartening to see so many people jump at trusting the Chicago Police Department and its process over Jussie Smollett. The details were messy on both sides, but the CPD has been a corrupted force for a long time. https://t.co/4puS41WJlP— Raquel Willis (@RaquelWillis_) March 26, 2019
I just want to know what actually happened. https://t.co/jrqpKXSMkJ— Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith) March 26, 2019

Looking forward to the MAGA set using the word 'exonerated' when referring to Jussie Smollett like they are referring to Trump as being 'exonerated'— Roland Scahill (@rolandscahill) March 26, 2019

Conservatives: Well, um, you see, uh, the thing about that is...
I'd like a federal investigation into the Chicago police department's decades of mafia payoffs, torture of suspects, and lying under oath. We can't all be happy.https://t.co/6FHusv1Z5V— Patrick Nonwhite (@NonWhiteHat) March 26, 2019
If another person texts me about Jussie Smollett...— jelani cobb (@jelani9) March 26, 2019
Interesting. And kinda predictable. Jussie Smollett's whole case felt mishandled from the beginning. https://t.co/HZRECqGYXl— Britni Danielle (@BritniDWrites) March 26, 2019
