George Zimmerman’s lawyer has abandoned his client’s bond request. Attorney Mike O’Mara announced on his website Tuesday (June 5) that he will not be filing a motion until further notice. O’Mara provided no information as to why he decided to drop the accused killer’s bid to be released from custody, until the start date of his trial in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman was ordered back into custody late last week, after he was found to have deceived the court during his bond hearing in which both he and his wife claimed to have had no money, yet amassed well over$100,000 from public donations. The 28-year-old’s lawyer maintains that the couple had no intention of withholding the truth, but felt like the they needed to “secure themselves.”
Since being taken back to jail, financial support for the one-time neighborhood watch volunteer has spiked. As previously reported, Zimmerman was receiving roughly $1,000 a day from online donations, but the number has increased over the last two days. O’Mara shut down Zimmerman’s first website, TheRealGeorgeZimmerman.com, and launched another site, as well as Facebook and Twitter pages.
In the last few weeks, several damaging pieces of evidence have been made public, including medical records that show that the Florida resident was under the influence of the anxiety medication Temazepam, also known as Restoril, on the night of the murder. While lawyers on both sides have not stated whether or not the drugs had any affect on his actions, they have requested that much of the confidential documents be kept under wraps in order to help him receive a fair trial.
A new bond hearing is not scheduled to take place for several more weeks, and Zimmerman will sit in jail until then. If he is denied bond again, he will be behind bards until the start of the trial, which may not take place until 2013.
