Former CNN Host Claims To Have Been Pulled Over For “Driving While Black”

T.J. Holmes, a former host on CNN, was pulled over by police Monday (July 30) and believes it was racially motivated. While Holmes did not reveal exactly where he was when the incident occurred, he took to Twitter to break the news. “Yep, in sitting on the side of the road 1 mile from my house with 2 cop cars behind me,” he wrote. Holmes also tweeted a photo of the squad car in his side mirror under the caption “Driving while black ain’t no joke!”

According to his recount, Holmes was told by officers that he was stopped to “make sure” he had “insurance on the car.”

Racial profiling at the hands of police officers continues to be a national issue. Like Holmes, director Tyler Perry was also pulled over by police for no reason, upon leaving his studio in Atlanta.  Additionally, the state of New York has been in the news over its controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which gives officers the right to pull over or stop people they deem as suspicious (which often tend to be Black and Latino men) and conduct searches.

Holmes left the news network late last year. He has been named the new host of BET’s forthcoming late night satirical program, Don’t Sleep with T.J. Holmes.
