Ex-Wife Of Nelson Mandela Denies Criticizing Icon

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Winnie Mandela, the ex-wife of South African icon Nelson Mandela has received harsh backlash from an interview where she was quoted criticizing Africa's former leader.

In an interview with the London Evening Standard, she's quoted as saying that she “can't forgive” Mandela for accepting the Noble Peace Prize in 1993 alongside white president F.W. De Kler and that he “let us down”, referring to herself and the rest of South Africa.

Now however she's denying the interview altogether, saying that she never spoke with anyone from the paper and that the quotes are false.

She released a statement saying,

"I will in the coming days deal with what I see as an inexplicable attempt to undermine the unity of my family, the legacy of Nelson Mandela and the high regard with which the name Mandela is held here and across the globe.”

The London Standard is standing by their story and has a released a statement of their own saying,

“Nadira Naipaul is a distinguished journalist who visited Winnie Mandela at home and spoke to her at length about her experiences. Nadira and her husband, the writer Sir V.S. Naipaul, are photographed with Winnie Mandela and this picture was printed with the article. We cannot understand Winnie Mandela's denial of an event and conversation which clearly took place."

Someone's lying here….and I think it's pretty obvious who that person is.
