Cornel West Criticizes President Obama For Not Being "Martin Luther King-Like"

Professor and activist Cornel West has confessed that he’s having second thoughts about President Obama.

In an interview with NPR, Dr. West states that he not only does he wish the president were more “Martin Luther King-like“, but also voiced his concern about the lack of love and respect he sees between races.

“More and more black folk tend to be well-adjusted to Obama’s presidency, but does that mean they’re well-adjusted to injustice?”Dr. West said in the interview.

“We don’t hear our president talking about the need for high-quality jobs for everybody, giving it priority, not just giving a speech in Detroit. When are you going to make jobs rather than Wall Street a priority? That’s what I’m concerned about.”

In the interview, Dr. West states that a lack of love and trust for the people of America as a whole is what’s driving the message of compassion for the poor to be pushed to the margin.

“Love and trust and justice, concern for the poor, that’s being pushed to the margins and you can see it…You can see it in terms of the obsession on Wall Street with not just profits but greed, more profit, more profit. You see it in our television culture that’s obsessed with superficial spectacle. You see it even in our educational systems, where the market model becomes central.”

Although Dr. West feels that President Obama shouldn’t have a “black agenda”, he does feel that it is necessary for the President to address issues that the community is facing.

As previously reported, Dr. West had some harsh words for the President after accusing him of not handling critics, especially black critics, properly. West states that instead of addressing his concerns with answers, the President ‘treated him like a cub scout’.

“I hadn’t seen him for two and a half weeks, and he made a beeline to me, though, brother, and he was deeply upset. He talked to me like I was a Cub Scout, and he was a pack master, you know what I mean?” Dr. West said.

“I respect my dear brother, but I don’t like to be demeaned and humiliated in that way and I didn’t get a chance to respond to him. And I hope maybe at some time we can. But it was very, it was a very ugly kind of moment, it seems to me, and that disturbs me because then it raises the question for me: Does he have a double standard for black critics as opposed to white critics?”

Silly negroes. Obama only serves one master and that is the elite. Democrat or Republican they are pushing forward the agenda of the oligarchs and not the proletariat. Wake up people and vote both parties out.

      • Not-so-silly Negro

        Well said.

I am in total agreement with Brother West except for the end because I have no knowledge about any meeting or bad blood between the two so I cannot comment about it. But Brother West is absolutely right. The main concern that affects all communities is the lack of jobs and it seems like President Obama and Congress are only concerned with Wall Street because they’re the ones that donate major contributions. Jobs are key and they haven’t been addressed the way it should’ve been thus far.

Why doesn’t West be more “King-like” and less ego-like? I swear black people act like a barrel full of crabs sometimes. SMH.

BROTHA WEST LIKES TO HEAR HIMSELF TALK. I’M SO SICK OF HIM AND THAT DAMN MICHAEL DYSON,AND TAVIS SMILEY HATING ON OUR PRESIDENT. IT’S SO SAD THAT THESE MEN TALK MORE THAN THEY DO IN THE COMMUNITY.

Obama can’t win. Both sides are against him.

I think he (West) raises some fair questions. And I don’t see any focus which is solely on blacks in his argument. King’s concern, as West said, was with the least of these (the poor), which included all colors. It seems West is also critical of a double-standard aimed at blacks whom Obama doesn’t mind calling out. Is he correct? Are people who feel like Pres. Obama does not deserve any criticism adjusted to injustice and therefore maladjusted? It’s a fair question. Obama represents power that is not always modified by love. Only a fool would think such power always has his or her best interest.

Cornel West. I respect and love the brother, but he is out of line. He is expecting some special “Brother Man Treatment” from the president in front of white people. He needs to not worry about what white people think and since HE is a minister, he should remember that Barack Obama is the president, NOT JESUS. He cannot cure the sick and make the lame walk.

I am coming to the same conclusion everyday but as of right not I am not totally downing President Obama. For the life of me I don’t understand why a man who has a completely black family doesn’t not choose to speak up for the black race more maybe his children are the special ones.

I have never looked at this man as my savior but it is nice to see a blackish face in high places but it does seems that when most black people get to this point they have already sold out.

When Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 night the devil tried to temp him but realizing that there was nothing to temp within him I would love to me more in that state of mind and heart.

As a professional and someone who is close enough to even garner the attention of one of the most powerful beings in the United States of America… I think Dr. West should have kept his critique to himself and discussed it privately with the President…you know between two men not shaking his you know what or his super EGO. Lucky there is some type of freedom of speech or else he might be in prison for thought crimes. :-9
