Nigerian 'Sesame Street' To Debut HIV-Positive Muppet
Popular children's show Sesame Street will get a new twist in Nigeria when its producers debut Kami, a girl muppet who is HIV-positive.
Producers have announced plans to debut “Sesame Square” a Nigerian take on Sesame Street featuring new characters like Kobi, an “energetic blue muppet whose troublesome escapades help others learn from their mistakes” and Kami, a “golden haired girl muppet who is HIV Positive.”
The HIV Positive muppet will carry a message of awareness for children in the country that has an estimated 278,000 children living with the disease.
In addition to the HIV-Positive muppet, Sesame Square will teach children about the dangers of infecting malaria by showing the character Zobi getting tangled in a mosquito net and enforcing that a net is one of the best ways to prevent infection.
