Admit it, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have had one hell of a year. Successful singles ranging from used clothes ("Thrift Shop") to gay rights ("Same Love") helped earn the duo a Best Rap/Hip-Hop honor at the American Music Awards Sunday (Nov. 23). Which naturally meant slander from the Twitter peanut gallery.

The Seattle natives snatched up their award via satellite from Miami, and during his acceptance speech, Macklemore quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and mentioned Trayvon Martin:

"Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it," the rapper announced. This is really happening. These are our friends, our neighbors, our peers and our fans, and it's time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it."

Interesting timing indeed but for what it's worth, we already know that Macklemore tackles taboo issues, and isn't scared to talk about race.

From a group perspective, he and Lewis are considered "Rap/Hip-Hop" at award shows (they won a similar category at the MTV Video Music Awards), and Macklemore earned a spot XXL's Freshman Class cover in 2012. Furthermore, The Heist went platinum, and "Thrift Shop" sold over seven million copies worldwide. We can't deny the facts.

And this look is as "Hip-Hop" as it gets, no?

Also, beating out Jay Z (Magn Carta Holy Grail) and Kendrick Lamar (good kid m.a.a.d. city) doesn't come without a little slander.

Get into it in the following pages.

So a white guy wins best R&B and another white guy wins best rap.... Looks like whites are planning to steal yet another genre away from blacks..

    • Morgan

There is a difference between stealing it and working hard at it. It took Macklemore 13 years and 3 independently released albums to get to this point. Give credit where credit is due. Black people have done way more to hurt the legitemacy of Hip Hop as an artform in recent years then White people have.

      • MiaSara

Yup, and we did it by accepting why tes in the first place.
The take over began with Eminem.

  • Asking_Questions

Welp, this isn't new look at Elvis, he stole his whole persona from blacks musicians. That's how you know you're successful, when white folks start jacking your style. While we're on topic am I the only one side eyeing Mackle-less when they mentioned Treyvon and were praised about it but when Jamie Foxx mentions him he's a race-bating villain?

      AMEN!!!!!

  • natturnfreedomrider

Maybe if black rappers go back to conscience rap they can pick up an award too maybe even be taken seriously again!

    • Stelio Kontos

Apparently you've never heard of Common, The Roots, Lupe Fiasco, etc. All of which never won a Grammy or award for their "Consciensce" (conscious) rap

      • natturnfreedomrider

By the way the roots did win awards for their music!

      • Stelio Kontos

Uuhh, if you knew them, then I'm not sure why you'd make such a silly generalization about rap music.

      • natturnfreedomrider

Wow you read some books! Im happy 4 you

      • Stelio Kontos

...What are you even talking about? Your point is moot. Done with you.

      • Stelio Kontos

And I don't recall The Roots winning ANY of the awards that Macklemore is nominated for...

  • natturnfreedomrider

These mainstream (white)award shows are biased. Get over it! Legitimize rap again by taking the power from white record companies

  • BeyHive Takeover

This award show was fan based voting. So you can't complain if you didn't help vote. Macklemore has a bigger fan base who actively votes for them to win the awards.

  • Doris G

I'm glad they won, the album was great, They deserved the award
