Gil Scott-Heron Album Out This April, New Single Debuts Today [LISTEN]

Gil Scott-Heron would have turned 65 on April 1, 2014. While he is no longer with us in the flesh, the fallen legend continues to live on through his poetry in a body of work that’s being released three years after his death.

British independent label XL Recordings has just announced a new project by Scott-Heron titled Nothing New. The posthumous album is due out on Record Store Day, April 19.

The iconic Jazz poet and musician, who was HIV-positive, passed away in 2011 at the age of 62, due to illness upon returning from a European trip. He is most revered for timeless records such as, “The Revolution Will Be Televised,” “Johannesburg,” “The Bottle” and “Whitey on the Moon” amongst others. Regarded as a godfather of Hip-Hop, Gil has been sampled by many a-list MCs including, Talib Kweli, Common, Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick Lamar, Mos Def, Nas, Drake and Kanye West.

Scott-Heron’s new single, “Alien (Hold On To Your Dreams),” was released in conjunction with the Nothing New announcement. Spin it below.
