Uber Driver Arrested For Trying To Kidnap Female Passenger

There’s a glitch in the Uber matrix. Most people enjoy the convenience of calling a town car or SUV rather than wasting the gas money, and it’s been working pretty well –until now.

Frederick Dencer, 32, was arrested Monday (June 2) for allegedly kidnapping and planning to sexually assault a woman he picked up at Greystone Manor in West Hollywood, Calif. the night before.

Before he picked the woman up, Dencer had finished another Uber job and was waiting outside of Greystone. A club employee may have asked him to drive the woman — who was drink — home. “Had this been an official Uber assignment, Dencer would have received the victim’s home address with the fare, but in this case [she] was too drunk to tell him,” the Los Angeles Police Department said in a new release.

Instead of taking her home, Dencer drove the woman to “a cheap motel” and “carried her into the room,” according to LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon. “He slept right in the room. When she woke, he let her leave, though he asked her to say, according to the victim.”

The woman called 911 from a nearby 7-Eleven and told police that she had no recollection of how she ended up at the motel. When questioned, Dencer’s story “didn’t make any sense” to authorities.

“It looks like he made a rash decision to take advantage of a vulnerable woman, and he’s not the first man to try that,” Vernon said. “The irony is, the victim was trying to be responsible by calling for a ride, but she unwittingly put herself in another vulnerable situation.Hopefully others will learn from this, and thankfully she was not assaulted or injured.”

Dencer was booked on kidnapping with the purpose of sexual assault. He is being held on $1 million bail.
