Black Brooklyn Kid Metal Band Signs To Sony For $1.7M [Video]

Unlocking The Truth, a metal band trio of Black Brooklyn eighth-graders, has been buzzing since videos of the crew rocking out have gone viral the past few years. Now, the talented middle school metal-heads have inked a two-album deal with Sony Records.

Guitarist Malcolm Brickhouse, 13, bassist Alec Atkins, 13, and drummer Jarad Dawkins, 12, have been grinding it out the past two years and their hard work culminated into the Sony deal. Sony has agreed to produce two records with an option of four more albums should they continue their working relationship as reported by the New York Daily News. If all six records are recorded with Sony, the group could yield a potential $1.7 million.

The group was discovered in 2012 by singer Eric Clampton’s drummer Steve Jordan playing in Washington Square Park, and gigged at the Apollo Theater, opened up for the Guns N’ Roses band and also performed at this year’s Coachella Festival.

More from the Daily News:

Annette Jackson, Malcolm’s mother and the group’s co-manager, said Jolene Cherry from Sony reached out and wanted to offer a contract over the phone, but to prove the label’s interest, she flew the boys to Los Angeles where they gave a private performance that sealed the deal.

The papers were filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, since the boys are minors and any contracts with minors need court approval in New York State.

Dawkins said the boys are all entering the eighth grade at different schools in Brooklyn next year and they’re all good students.

“School work comes first. If their school work is not done, they don’t play,” she said.

The boys also have a publishing deal with Penguin and will release a book about their rise to fame. Unlocking The Truth is also in the midst of filming a documentary about their career to date.
