Darrien Hunt, a 22-year-old Black man who was dressed in a cosplay costume as an anime character, was shot to death by cops in Utah in September. After the family’s independent autopsy was revealed, a state-issued report supported earlier findings that Hunt was shot several times in the back.

The Associated Press reported on the latest autopsy, which highlights that Hunt was shot at least four times in the back with the bullets exiting the front of his body. In total, six gunshot wounds were found. The officers under question in this case, Cpl. Matthew Schauerhamer and Officer Nicholas Judson, are both white.

The AP has more:

The state autopsy documents six gunshot wounds on the body of 22-year-old Darrien Hunt and finds at least four of the shots entered his body from behind.

That generally confirms the results of an independent autopsy released by his family, who said Hunt was treated differently because he was black.

“I don’t think anyone would have thought twice if it wasn’t someone with an afro,” said his mother, Susan Hunt, on Tuesday. Police say race wasn’t a factor.

Hunt was shot Sept. 10 as he walked around a strip mall in the Utah city of Saratoga Springs wearing a red shirt and blue pants similar to an anime character and a 2 ½ foot steel sword. Police said they were responding to a 911 call about a man with a sword when he lunged at them, swinging the weapon.

But his family says the sword was decorative rather than dangerous.

The fatal police shooting occurred on Sept. 10 outside a strip mall in Saratoga Springs, which is just outside of Salt Lake City. Hunt was dressed in a samurai outfit, and was channeling a character from the popular anime, Samurai Champloo. Two officer allege that Hunt charged them with a plastic toy sword, but the family contends the cops attacked him.

In the autopsy conducted by the family, the findings seemed to confirm the possibility that Hunt was actually running away from the police when they fired at least seven shots with four hitting the man. The family, along with attorney Robert Sykes, claims they have eyewitness accounts and photo evidence that point to Hunt not being the aggressor.

Officer Schauerhamer was recently slammed for what appeared to be racial prejudice in an fumbling article he wrote about teens and drug use.

The Utah County Attorney’s Office says it will conclude within the week whether or not the officers were within legal rights to shoot and kill Hunt.
