Twenty-three years ago today, Brooklyn rapper Special Ed released his debut album, Youngest In Charge (props to UpNorthTrips for the reminder). Entirely produced by “Hitman” Howie Tee, the album is considered a classic thanks to bumping beats and the advanced rhymes of a then teenaged Special Ed. The record’s biggest hit was “I Got It Made,” which was ubiquitous in NYC before spreading to any city with even a faint Hip-Hop pulse.
Youngest In Charge was stocked with dope album cuts, too. Records like “Taxing,” “Hoedown” and “Fly M.C.” got heavy burn in Sony Walkmans (yeah, Aiwas too) but the singles “Think About It” and “T’m The Magnificent” easily got the most run. Peep the videos for this ’89 rap classic in the gallery.

Special Ed “I Got It Made”
If you were in school when this video dropped, then you know it perfectly encapsulates that era (at least in NYC). The Running Man and hi-top fades. Fresh rhymes, daily.
Special Ed “Think About It”
A video with an actual plot. A classic beat (with a choice Rakim vocal swipe) and a rapper on a hovercraft…in 1989. Â Â
Special “I’m The Magnificent”
This video was actually the remix to the album version of “I’m The Magnificent.” The song ended up appearing on Ed’s sophomore album, Legal. The video is extra special since it was directed by Malcolm Jamal Warner (aka Theo from The Cosby Show) and the dancers would become a freshly dipped rap group called Zhigge.
