New York’s “stop-and-frisk” policy continues to be hot-button among the NYPD and community members alike, but Commissioner Ray Kelly has had enough. Kelly addressed the media Tuesday (July 10) revealing that 77 people were shot  in the city from July 2-8. “There doesn’t seem to be any major community response,” Kelly said. “Many of them will speak out about stop-and-frisk [but are] shockingly silent when it comes to the level of violence right in their own communities.”

When questioned about why the policy racially profiles Black and Latinos, he shifted the blame. “Ninety-six percent of our shooting victims are people of color, yet these community leaders are not speaking out about that,” he said. . “I’d like to see some political outcry… I want them to be outraged that a 3-year-old child is shot on the streets.”

State Sen. Eric Adams accused Kelly of furthering the racial divide. “I believe [Kelly] is using racial undertones to divide this city on who has a passion to deal with the issues of crime,”  Adams told the New York Post.  “He basically said black elected officials don’t care about the safety of their community.”

Rev. Al Sharpton blasted Kelly stating that community leaders “stand with him against violence,” yet “disagree with him on stop-and-frisk.” On the contrary, Mayor Michael Bloomberg—who has been vocal with his support on the NYPD’s policy racially insensitive policy—said that Kelly “didn’t say anything he hasn’t said multiple times before.”
