Hampton University students have restrictions on what they can do with their hair. The historically Black college has banned its male MBA students from wearing cornrows and dreadlocks.

The rule, handed down from Business School Dean Sid Credle, was implemented in 2001, and continues to draw criticism. According to Credle, certain hairstyles are unprofessional, and demeaning to Black history.  “When was it that cornrows and dreadlocks were a part of African-American history?” he said. “I mean Charles Drew didn’t wear[them], Muhammad Ali didn’t wear [them]. Martin Luther King didn’t wear [them].”

Credle’s goal is to continue to produce viable competitors in the business world, and believes that outward appearance is a very important part of success. “We’ve been very successful,” he said. “We’ve placed more than 99 percent of the students who have graduated from this school, this program.

“What we do is pay tribute to that image and say those are your role models.  This is a way you will look when you become president. If you’re going to play baseball, you wear baseball uniforms. If you’re going to play tennis, you wear [a] tennis uniform.”

Although Credle does make an interesting point, having locks for example doesn’t necessarily hinder one’s shot at success. Noted journalist, motivational speaker, and social commentor, Jeff Johnson has appeared on networks BET, CNN, and Fox News, and is known for his signature locks.
