Sherriff Joe Arpaio has completely lost his mind. As if taking his delusions about President Obama’s birthplace to a public forum wasn’t bad enough, he thought that throwing a “birther bash” in Arizona, next month, would be a good idea. Not only did his plan fail miserably, but he was forced to cancel the party as of Friday (Sept. 7), because no one bothered to buy tickets.
The event, scheduled for Sept. 22, was meant to bring together other misguided figures—including singer Pat Boone—who believe that the president’s birth certificate is fake.
Arpaio, who picked up his suspicions from Donald Trump, has been heavy on his campaign to prove that Obama is not a citizen— thus making him ineligible to hold the nation’s highest office. “At the very least, I can tell you this, based on all of the evidence presented and investigated, I cannot in good faith report to you that these documents are authentic,” he said, noting that he interviewed the 95-year-old woman who signed Obama’s birth certificate when he was born. “My investigators believe that the long-form birth certificate was manufactured electronically and that it did not originate in a paper format as claimed by the White House.”
Very few rational people take Arpaio’s claims seriously, and even the president has made light of the situation. During a trip to an Orlando sports bar over the weekend, the president greeted a boy who was born in his home state. “You were born in Hawaii?” he said before joking: “You have a birth certificate?”
