The Force must be strong in Mickey Mouse. The Walt Disney Company has purchased Lucafilms, and as part of the deal, plan to release a seventh Star Wars movie in 2015, with new films planned every two to three years thereafter.

The deal was announced yesterday (October 30th), with Disney purchasing George Lucas’ company for $4.05 billion. “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next … It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers,” said Lucas in a press statement. “I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come.”

As Lucas’ statement suggests, Disney has plans for plenty of Star Wars films, including at least “Episode 8” and “Episode 9.” The cash and stock purchase of Lucasfilms, which was private company, makes Disney a superpower when it comes to sci-fi flicks. The house that Mickey Mouse built purchased Marvel for $4 billion in 2009 and Pixar Animation Studios for $7.4 billion in 2006.

While the prospect of new Star Wars films are exciting, the question is whether or not they will live up to the previous films and if Disney influence on their content will be detrimental to the story. Also, with the 68-year-old George Lucas planning to step back, and setting the stage for when he is no longer alive, you can’t help but wonder how it will effect the franchise.
