Has it really been 11 years since Cannibal Ox dropped their underground debut The Cold Vein? With time passed and backpack straps loosened over the years, lyrical Hip-Hop has taken a backseat to trap rap, club tracks and all the other popular rap styles du jour of the day. However, for fans who remember the days of official headphone bars and beats on December 9 at Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory, the dynamic duo of Vast Aire and Vordul Mega will reunite under the Cannibal Ox banner for a show alongside other underground.
Cannibal Ox made a splash in the Spring of 2001 with The Cold Vein album which was produced entirely by recent Killer Mike collaborator (and former Company Flow frotman), El-P. The record captured New York at the time perfectly: a bleak landscape of brick, metal and widespread poverty. Vast and Vordul traded heady verses over El-P’s schizophrenic production, giving the now-defunct Def Jux record label a distinction of being ahead of the curve. Things have changed and the duo hasn’t done a proper follow up, although both have released various solo projects.
Joining the “Cipher Unknown” next month onstage will be Double AB, former Def Jukkie C-Rayz Walz, Creature and others. As of now, it doesn’t appear that Cannibal Ox has been working on new material nor have they announced plans to finally record a sophomore effort.
