Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is en route to the Middle East today in hopes of facilitating an end to airstrikes that have claimed the lives of more than 100 people in Gaza City.

Once she arrives, Clinton will meet with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. A senior Israeli government official revealed to ABC News, plans to cease fire in lieu of reaching a less violent agreement.

After Israel, Clinton will meet with officials in Ramallah, Palestine and Egypt, the latter of which has been trying to mediate between the two countries.

Clinton left from Cambodia where she had been on a three-country tour of Asia, alongside President Obama.

Sending Clinton to the Middles East is an aggressive move by the Obama administration which supports Israel’s right for protection, but wants to bring a more diplomatic end to the conflict. “We believe that Israel, like the United States, like other countries, would prefer to see their interests met diplomatically and peacefully,” said Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for the Obama administration. “It’s in nobody’ interest to see and escalation of the military conflict.”

Israel maintains that its attack on Palestine is a form of protection in an attempt to flesh out Hamas members. Several civilians have been caught in the crossfire, including 24 children.
