The man carjacked by former LAPD officer, Christopher Dorner, wants the $1 million reward up for grabs. Prior to the rogue cop’s demise, the hefty reward was put up, and has yet to be dispersed.
Richard Heltebrake, is the latest of 11 people seeking payment. He filed a lawsuit in L.A. Monday (April 29), to get his hands on the money.
On Feb. 12, Dorner car jacked Heltebrake at gun point, during a short-lived run from authorities. After the robbery, Heltebrake phoned the San Bernardino Co. Sheriff and reported the incident. Cops eventually found Dorner in a pursuit that ended in the deaths of four innocent victims, and the suspect committing suicide, once cornered inside a cabin.
Since Heltebrake technically aided in the Dorner bust, he wants the money, which includes contributions from various counties and cities in Southern California. In addition to the $1 million, the 61-year-old filed for three $100,000 rewards from the city of Riverside, Calif., as well as Riverside County, and Irvine, Calif.
Officials have been slow to make the payout given the technicalities. Dorner reportedly died from a self-inflicted wound which would mean that he was never really “captured” or apprehended, as stated in the compensation rules.
The city of Riverside has already decided not to make good on the offer, retracting it’s $100,000 pledge last month.
