Now here’s a story that’s only built for pop culture folklore. Up from the 36 Chambers, the Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah and Raekwon infiltrated Fox Sports to appear on Crowd Goes Wild with Regis Philbin. The 82-year-old talk show host, who has more than 60 years of show business experience, openly admitted to “turning on his 8-track and putting on a ‘lil Wu-Tang” when he wants to let off some steam.
The introduction would have been believable if he didn’t subsequently butcher Raekwon’s name by calling him “Kijuan.” Dah, well. The Chef didn’t harbor any ill will, bestowing Philbin with a “Protect Ya Neck” t-shirt as well as proclaiming the Bronx native as the “new ODB.” What’s the under-and-over to having him appear on that upcoming album in 2014?
After giving the audience a run-down of the group’s storied history, the topic switched to football where Raekwon proclaimed Jerome Bettis as one of his “favorite running backs of all time,” asking the crowd to call out his jersey number as direct reference to the Wu’s classic debut album.
But that’s not where the fun ended. The Shaolin duo had the honor to be the inaugural participants of “That’s A Rap,” as Regis read rapper/athlete lyrics and had the pair attempt to fill in the blanks. Hilarity ensues as Rae blatantly disses a Deion Sanders lyric and Ghostface gets stumped over some Kobe Bryant struggle bars.
