Another week, another batch of music. It can all be flustering for listeners to keep up, and because of this, we’ve packaged the best of the crop in The Wrap Up: Hip-Hop Wired’s Top 10 Songs Of The Week.
The last week belonged to underground MCs for the most part. We were captivated by tracks released by an older newcomer hailing from Chicago, who prides himself on “soul trappin.” We also heard a voluntarily leaked track from one of this year’s highly anticipated projects.
In between those, you’ll hear various displays of lyricism from some rappers we suggest you get acquainted with sooner than later. Thank us later. Find all of your Hip-Hop need in The Wrap-Up on the following pages.

10. Russ – “Goodbye”
The Atlanta-based newcomer can rhyme about love (and lost) with the best of them. See proof above.
9. Bishop Nehru – “You Stressin” (Prod. by Disclosure)
After listening to this track, you’ll see why this young MC’s name is buzzing among Hip-Hop circles near and far. New York should be proud.
Tree’s The @MCTREEG EP is getting some spins around these parts, but no track (by our standards) capture his “soul trap” sound like the namesake tune above.
7. RATKING – “Canal”
Those saying New York City Hip-Hop is dead need to look a little harder, because collectives like RATKING are performing at a high level, consistently.
6. Nickelus F – ’99 Alive
Sweet Petey has an interesting way of keeping his verses lyrical, but very comedic in the same breath. For that, we appreciate him.
5. Pete Rock, Lecrae & Rapsody – “Be Inspired”
Jamla quietly owned this week with their quartet of releases. This was the last of the bunch, but that certain says nothing about its quality.
4. Dag Savage (Exile & Johaz) ft. Blu – “Don’t Stop”
Ain’t a damn thing but lyricism and ill beats on this track from the West Coast producer-rapper combo.
3. DJ Kay Slay ft. 50 Cent & Fat Joe – “Free Again”
This jaw dropping collaboration was facilitated by the Drama King himself. Needless to say that this is quality street music.
2. Talib Kweli, Elzhi & Phonte – “No Competition”
Not a lyrical stone was left unturned on this Khrysis-produced record. It’s been out for days, and we’re still debating over who had the best verse — Elzhi or Phontigallo?
1. ScHoolboy Q – “Break The Bank”
It’s Quincy’s time, as his long-awaited debut, Oxymoron, is set to debut February 25. With Alchemist on the beat, the TDE rapper paints the story of his life for all to hear.
