Jada Pinkett Smith makes a return to television after being signed to join the cast of Fox’s Batman-related prequel series, Gotham. Smith will play the character of Fish Mooney, a notorious mob boss who has connections to one of Batman’s greatest foes.

Entertainment Weekly reported on the news of the addition of Pinkett Smith to Gotham‘s cast, and the choice of the attractive actress as a street gangster is interesting to say the least. And while Pinkett Smith has played tough characters in her past roles, stepping in as a villain in the universe of one of DC Comics’ most famous heroes is a big step. Entertainment Weekly has more.

From Entertainment Weekly:

In the show, Fish is “a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, she’s got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book. Imposing and hotheaded, she’s not one to be crossed.” Fish Mooney also the boss of a young psycho named Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), who eventually becomes The Penguin (and we all know what penguins eat … right?).

The casting marks The Matrix Reloaded and Revolution‘s actress return to TV following the axing of her 2009 medical drama TNT series Hawthorne.

According to EW, a source close to the Gotham production team say that Fish Mooney may be an original character although roles cast thus far have characters from the world of Batman.
