On the heels of Power and Empire, Netflix is hopping aboard the Hip-Hop programming train with The Get Down. The Baz Luhrmann-helmed drama is scheduled to premiere in 2016.
Luhrmann has had previous success, but is the guy behind Moulin Rouge! the person you want behind a Hip-Hop project? Is this even strictly about the culture behind rap music? Here’s what to expect from Netflix’s The Get Down so far.

Luhrmann’s previous credits include Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby, and Romeo+Juliet. Those don’t exactly scream Hip-Hop expertise, but this could still win.
The initial deal is for 13 episodes, and since this is Netflix, all 13 will be available at once regardless of the initial critical reception.
While it’s being billed as a “Hip-Hop drama,” it appears The Get Down will also focus on Punk, Hip-Hop, and Disco.
The Get Down will be Netflix’s newest original project from an outside after a multiple network bidding war.
Catherine Martin will serve as costume and production designer. She also joined Luhrmann on Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby, but no word on whether or not we should expect to see fingerless gloves.
No one from the cast—not even potential stars—has been named.
In a statement, Luhrmann said many of his partners behind the scenes of the upcoming series “grew up with and lived the story we’ve set out to tell.” That bodes well for all of us skeptics. The fact that none of those stories look Hip-Hop related is a bit troubling.
The Get Down has been in development and been shopped around to various networks and studios since 2013, so this is a long time in the making.
