At the close of last week, Lil Mama made a worldwide impression with her return to the music game, “Sausage.” Although it quickly amassed a couple of million views on YouTube, the overall reaction (on social media) was that the majority seemed to hate it…because it was Lil Mama.

Despite, the “fake hate,” it appears that Lil Mama’s comeback season will be this summer as not everyone is hopping on the smear campaign.

To appease those young fans who the song indefinitely caters to, we decided to highlight the songs used as the record’s base to show there’s a clear line between paying homage and biting.

Wu-Tang Clan – “C.R.E.A.M.”

The acronym that stands for “Cash Rules Everything Around Me” has been a motto within the culture for 20 years and Lil Mama isn’t stepping out of boundaries by chasing the money.

Slick Rick – “Mona Lisa”

That funky fresh beat without an abundance of 808s and bass drops Lil Mama is rapping over is simply called “Hip-Hop.” It was also found amongst the many jewels on Slick Rick’s incredible 1988 debut, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.

Kelis – “Milkshake”

Anytime you hear “milkshake” and “boys in the yard” in the same sentence, remember it came here first.

Method Man – “Method Man”

That gruff delivery mixed with the “Hey, you!” Well, that’s © Mr. Meth back when he was in his rookie season.

Fetty Wap – “Trap Queen”

Still, you can’t forget about the new school and Lil Mama dropped a sly little metaphor to one of the biggest songs of the year.

Mary J. Blige – “Seven Days”

When Lil Mama suddenly became dressed as she was a newly crowned widow, she hadn’t lost her mind. She was simply saluting the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul: Mary J. Blige.

Chedda Da Connect – “Flicka Da Wrist”

This is easily the most obvious one.

Lil Mama – “Lip Gloss”

Although she endured similar criticism in 2007, the phrase “My lip gloss is poppin'” has gone on to become a signature catchphrase.

“Sausage”

Of course, the song was inspired by social media. Like Charlamagne said, it’s the new “streets.”
