A former Rikers Island inmate who was hogtied and savagely beaten by corrections officers has been awarded a $450,000 settlement.
Reports the New York Post:
City taxpayers will have to shell out $450,000 to compensate a Rikers inmate for being “hogtied” with shackles and then savagely beaten by a correction captain and five officers in April 2012.
Robert Hinton, 28, won the six-figure settlement deal this week, The Post has learned.
He suffered a broken nose and fractures to his vertebrae in the beatdown when he was in solitary confinement in a cellblock for prisoners with mental illness.
Hinton was being transferred to a different area of the jail when he refused to move.
The captain and five correction officers started beating him, saying, “You don’t get what you want, you get what you deserve, which is an ass-whipping,” according to Hinton’s Manhattan federal court lawsuit, court papers reveal.
An administrative law judge recommended that the guards be fired, an unusual step that the Department of Correction carried out in January.
Hinton, who was reportedly a Bloods gang member, was in jail for a parole violation stemming from an attempted murder conviction.
He finished his sentence about six months ago.
