Destiny’s Child, Justin Timberlake and 50 Cent. The last time all three of these people were musically relevant we were still watching Total Request Live.
Yes, 90s babies. Before VEVO, YouTube, Vimeo, OnSmash and (sigh) World Star Hip Hop there was MTV. A music video channel that exclusively showed music videos. Remember that?
MTV’s flagship show was Total Request Live, also known as TRL, was a daily countdown show where you the fans would phone in votes for which video you wanted to see the most. The show became a pop culture staple that defined a generation of screaming tweens in Times Square and across the country.
The channel’s highest rated show, TRL, was a launching pad for today’s biggest stars like Eminem, Destiny’s Child, NSYNC, 50 Cent and many more. Moreso being a pop show, the show established some of the most commercially successful rappers of all-time.
Today we take a look at some of the most popular Hip-Hop videos that popped off in that era. Check it all out after the jump.
