As an independent artist, Kid Ink saw a steady rise in his success that awarded him a place on the 2012 XXL Freshman list. Four mixtapes, including the recently released Rocketshipshawty, and an independent album later, the California native decided to take his talents to RCA Records.

Ink decided to sit down with Charlamagne, DJ Envy and Angela Yee, otherwise known as The Breakfast Club to explain his major career move, his tattoos, his place in the Los Angeles’ rap scene and more.

“For me it’s a ceiling that you just as an independent artist, where after a while you just start looking like you’re doing the same thing,” said  the “Bad A$$” rapper. “Really for me, I was just so sold with the independent album. We released it and had a good first week, and [it’s] still selling records now. It’s still in the top 100 on iTunes.”

He continued, “The only next thing to do wouldn’t be [to] release another mixtape and another independent album. The fans and everybody’s already seen that before. I’m trying to hit a new market, and just take it to the next level and do bigger things as an artist.”

It’ll be interesting to see what Kid Ink does with major label backing. But if RCA can do to him what they did with another young gunner named A$AP Rocky, the tattooed MC will be just fine.
