In the midst of last night’s Grammy madness, you might’ve missed some groundbreaking news involving Lecrae. The Christian rapper made history as the first MC to nab the Best Gospel Album award.

His sixth studio album Gravity granted him the unprecedented, but warranted win. The Grammy win will come as no surprise to the Houston native’s devoted fans, considering that they helped the project debut at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the Rap Charts with over 73K units sold. To some those would be menial first week numbers, but it speaks volumes for Lecrae, who’s an independent artist.

The “Mayday” spitter sat down for an interview after discovering he won the award. He spoke very candidly about Gravity, saying “My ambition was just to make honest music, and I really was not intending for it to be a traditional gospel album or anything. I was just very honest about my spirituality.”

Last year, Lecrae also dropped his first, critically acclaimed mixtape, Church Clothes, which featured No Malice of the Clipse and production by Boi-1da and 9th Wonder. Watch LeCrae speak on his his honor, and the creation of his Gravity album in the video below.
