Wale faced an awkward moment when he confronted two announcers for making fun of his career in comparison to Drake’s, and now he’s explaining why it needed to go down. Essentially, he’s not into people disrespecting the hard work he’s put in, but understands how his intentions could’ve been misconstrued.

Speaking with Power 99’s Cosmic Kev, the D.C. native said that since the NBA game between the Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors was on his home turf, he had to confront the men over the “he’s no Drake,” comment.

Since the audio was  missing from the exchange, no one knows what was said, and Wale didn’t share a word-for-word recount. “Anything at this point makes me sound volatile,” he said.  “When you’re in the moment you don’t really think about that, but now I’m thinking, ‘Okay, I’m around all these White people, and I’m a Black dude with dreads and tattoos walking upstairs to confront somebody almost in a exact opposite creed [from the]  design of me…I could see why that would be [misunderstood].

“Was I going over there to say ‘Hello sir my name is Wale can you not talk bad about me?’ No. But I was going over there to be like, ‘Yo, my man, you gotta have a little respect, you’re in my town. I know you’re trying to do your job, and I ain’t trying to disrespect you.'”

With a little time to think it over, he now realizes that the situation didn’t deserve immediate attention.  “Timing is everything, I could’ve waited.”
