The good folks of Home Depot may know a lot about hardware for your house, but they really missed the mark on race relations. The company made headlines yesterday (Nov. 7) after posting a racially insensitive tweet featuring a pair of black men accompanied by a man in a monkey getup, and Black Twitter reacted with force.
Thursday afternoon, Home Depot’s Twitter account posted a tweet featuring bucket-drumming trio for its “HDGameday” college football promotion. With the caption reading “Which drummer is not like the others?” in the tweet, the monkey bucket player in the middle juts out immediately.
After Twitter caught wind, a firestorm of responses came and the company removed the tweet then promptly apologized. The company also fired the individual who posted the tweet and cut ties with the agency that produced the picture. Naturally, the denizens of Black Twitter went in with fervor, and the image even got reaction from black members of the media.
Our question is: who in the world gave this ad the green light? They’re the ones that should be fired, not the agency. Just saying.
We’ve captured a few of the highlights of the Home Depot’s racist tweet backlash since the controversy began below.
Let us know if we missed any.
