New York has been known as the home for some of the best graffiti artists in the world, giving widespread legitimacy to the street art. At the Museum of the City of New York, aerosol artists of the 1970s and ’80s will have their work featured in a six-month exhibit beginning today (February 4).
The exhibit, “City as Canvas,” features around 150 pieces from famous graffiti writers from New York. According to a report from the New York Daily News, art from LEE, DAZE, Lady Pink and Tracy 168 will be shown. In fact, Tracy 168 is one of the city’s kings of the art form, credited for creating the “Wildstyle” form of graffiti.
“’City as Canvas’ provides a window into the origins of the graffiti movement, which began as an illicit activity and evolved into an art form that spawned a worldwide phenomenon,” said Sean Corcoran, the collection’s curator.
The exhibit runs from now until August 24, and are a part of late art collector Martin Wong’s 300-piece collection of street art.
