Chicago has done it again and that is not a coronating statement.

A 14-year-old girl was shot and killed by a fellow classmate of the same sex and gender allegedlly over a fight that had begun on Facebook over a boy. Endia Martin was pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital while another girl, 16 was hit in the arm and is expected to make a full recovery.

The sad and ironic underlying factor here is that her parents had intentionally moved her to that school because the commute from her previous one was “too far and dangerous.”

Reports ABC:

Charges are pending against two males, ages 17 and 24, who were with the suspect.

Martin, a freshman at Tilden Career Academy, was hanging out with friends in the 900 block of West Garfield when a fight broke out between Martin and the suspect. Another girl, 16, was shot in the arm. Police said the offender ran away but was taken into custody 20 minutes later. The fight between the two had apparently started on Facebook.

Martin was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she later died. The 16-year-old was taken to St. Bernard Hospital and is expected to recover.

The 14-year-old suspect appeared in juvenile court Tuesday. Prosecutors said Martin was with a group of people when the suspect approached and attempted to shoot them, but the gun malfunctioned. They said she handed the gun to others who were with her, who cleared the malfunction and handed the gun back to her, and they say she then opened fire.

The fact that a kid’s initial instict in solving a dispute is to grab a gun and there are several young bystanders with the ability to clear a weapon malfunction is beyond disturbing. Chicago’s recent streak of violence has made national headlines but there doesn’t seem to a resolvement in sight.
