Since the emergence of west coast favorite Kendrick Lamar, the TDE family is one of the more prominent crews in Rap. SZA stopped by The Breakfast Club to give the public some background on her come up and what the future holds for the New Jersey songstress.

With a well received Z EP just released, SZA is more than confident in her crafting her unique R&B soul sound. While she has let listeners into her world through her lyrics, there is still a bit of mystery surrounding her.

DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God got right to it in asking her details on her name, linking up with TDE, a Wu-Tang influence and more.

So we present the top 7 things we learned from The Breakfast Club SZA interview. Let us know your favorite moment in the comments section. You can view the interview in its’ entirety on last page.

Family

SZA was raised orthodox Muslim and grew up in a very strict household which made it difficult for her to listen to contemporary music.

The Name

SZA’s name is an acronym derived from the supreme alphabet. “S” represents “savior” or “sovereign,” the “Z” represents “zig-zag-zig,” which means knowledge and enlightenment of one’s self and A represents “Allah,” which is a higher power

The W

The Wu-Tang Clan was a big musical influence on her. Her favorite member is RZA.

School

SZA went to college for marine biology and she studied dance for over 10 years.

Top Dawg

Ironically SZA didn’t take singing very seriously. She randomly met a TDE executive and a friend happened to mention she sang. Months later she was signed to the label.

The Crew

Even though she is closest to Isaiah Rashad, she gravitates more towards Schoolboy Q lyrically.

The Future Holds

While the EP seems to be a success, her official album is still in the works.
