The Boondocks is supremely wack without Aaron McGruder, and now we have something to help cleanse our palates of what has become of that show. Today (July 18) Adult Swim released the official trailer for McGruder’s latest series, Black Jesus.

McGruder’s 30-minute scripted live-action comedy creation is set in Compton —  they year 2014 A.D. to be exact. B.J. is trying his damnedest to bring a little joy and positivity to the gang bangers, winos, and all around non-believers in the CPT. Clearly, it’s not as easy as he thought it would be.

Gerald “Slink Johnson,” best known for his voiceover work in  Grand Theft Auto V, stars as Jesus. The supporting cast includes, Charlie Murphy, John Whitherspoon, Corey Holcom, Angela Elayne Gibbs, Antwon Tanner,  and Valenzia Algarin.

Religion is a touchy subject but this looks pretty funny, and it’ll make you think. McGruder is getting  really good at this T.V. thing, let’s hope this one doesn’t go the way of The Boondocks.

Black Jesus premiers on Aug. 7 at 11 p.m. EST.
