Google‘s Maps service is under heavy scrutiny after it was discovered that The White House can be searched and listed under a racist slur. When users type in the words “n****a house,” the iconic Washington, D.C. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue address is what appears.
It appears that the discovery of this so-called glitch occurred via Twitter, prompting activist Deray Mckesson to tweet a screenshot of the Google search. From there, chatter regarding the slur and its attachment to the White House began to swell from that point. Soon after, news outlets began picking up on the discussion, with TMZ doing a bit of digging and speaking with reps from Google to find out how this could happen.
More from TMZ:
For some reason people in the D.C. area can also type in the full slur, with an “er” and get the same result.
It’s unclear if someone hacked into Google or if there’s a rogue employee.A Google spokesperson tells TMZ … “We apologize for any offense this may have caused. Our teams are working to fix this issue quickly.”
Since he’s been in office, President Barack Obama has endured racist attacks of varying sorts during the duration of his past two terms. Officials from The White House have yet to respond to the matter and there’s no indication that they will.
The next page features Deray’s tweet, complete with the slur in its full state.
