More information from the Ahmed Mohamed arrest has been released, which reveal the 14-year-old high school student’s rights as a United States citizen were blatantly disregarded. Arresting officers from the Irving Police Department were very well aware that the inventive teen–turned overnight national celebrity–didn’t bring a bomb to school but they slapped the cuffs on him regardless and whisked him away to the nearby juvenile detention center. “The officers pretty quickly determined that they weren’t investigating an explosive device,” Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd told MSNBC on Thursday. Ahmed’s teacher and principal didn’t show any better logical either after they determined the homemade clock was a bomb after the teen repeatedly told them it wasn’t. Meanwhile, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, the boy’s father, said he child won’t be returning to MacArthur High School. The public support for young Ahmed Mohamed and condemnation for the handing case has been overwhelming thus far, including President Obama extending an invitation to the teen to visit the White House with his clock. The Council on American-Islamic Relations has also come to his defense and blamed society’s perception on Muslims opposed to the actual forces who acted on that fateful September 15th day. Speaking with The Washington Post, Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Michigan, said it was vital for Ahmed’s brown skin not to take a backseat when looking back at the ordeal, either. “There’s a misunderstanding among many people about what Arabness means,” Walid noted. “Arabness and blackness are not mutually exclusive, just like being Latino and Black are not mutually exclusive.
