Wale’s latest visit to The Breakfast Club has lead to Meek Mill once again getting all in his feelings. However, the MMG rapper’s sit down on the show was loaded with insight that isn’t getting nearly enough discussion.
Since he’s never one to mince his words, which has repeatedly gotten him into hot water, Mr. Folarin makes for a great interview. Wale touched on gay musicians, drug addicted rapper, Raven-Symone struggle and more.
Here are 10 things we learned from Wale on The Breakfast Club, starting with…
Who’s Seinfeld?
Although The Album About Nothing was critically acclaimed, could Atlantic Records have done more to promote the project? The Breakfast Club thought so, but Wale did cop to not making records that he knows will be hits (i.e. “600 Benz”) versus songs that fall in line with his core audience.
Drug Dealer Rap to Drug Addict Rap
“I know rappers right now that do heroin. When you have a high tolerance for lean, what you think is the next best option?,” said Wale.
Well, Kevin Gates will co-sign that.
Black Lives Matter?
“I actually stand for something, that Black Lives Matter was treading the waters of insulting me, my blackness.”
Wale pointed out it’s like School Daze online everyday as far as colorism. He wants Black people to care about Black people more, but isn’t dismissing the importance of #BlackLivesMatter.
My Name Is My Name
Wale is also not here for Raven-Symone. “You trying to get a rise out of these white folks,” he said in regards to her infamous Watermelondria comments.
It was a sensitive topic to Wale because being that he was born Olubowale Victor Akintimehin, he is aware of people making fun of names.
Gay Rapper? Sign Here
Wale would absolutely sign a gay rapper. “It’s 2015, all that little homophobic stuff is corny.”
In fact, he believes being gay can actually help you in the music industry. “It’s an advantage to be [gay] in this country right now.”
He cited Frank Ocean as getting certain looks off the strength of his coming out versus Miguel or Ty Dolla $ign. Same deal for white gay artists like Sam Smith. Also, Wale thinks if Tank put out “Stay With Me” it wouldn’t have done as well. Hmm…
Hotline Blinging
Wale agrees that D.R.A.M. should feel a ways that Drake flipped “Cha Cha” into his smash hit “Hotline Bling.” He admitted he would be mad if someone did that to him. “That was his moment, that was his thing. There’s really no silver lining. That was vicious.”
Also, the Apple Music praise throughout the interview was fascinating.
The Management
Wale left Roc Nation because he felt like his day to day manager Rich Kleinman, was more focused on sports. He made sure to mention he introduced Kleinman to clients like Victor Cruz and Kevin Durant.
New Wale Music
Wale recently dropped a gang of new music. The Go-Go album is on the way while he says his new album is going to “push the envelope.” No word on a release date, though.
No, he’s not dating the singer, Serayah McNeil, from Empire.
MMG Is Not The Navy
“Everybody is doing what they gotta do,” said Wale when asked if MMG was still the family unit it was before. If it was bloodshed he said it would be a different situation, though. But it ain’t.
