Before the currently M.I.A. Frank Ocean, Maxwell was the original R&B artist at large. The Brooklyn native who is masterful at releasing a critically acclaimed project about once every few Presidential terms explained himself on The Breakfast Club.
Now that President Obama’s 2nd term is nearing it’s end, the Brooklyn crooner knows it’s about that time and is releasing an album this summer.
In preparation for the release, the man from the multicultural background made an appearance hit Power 105’s flagship show—sans Angela Yee—where he spoke to Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy about why there were times he didn’t feel Black enough, why he takes so long releasing his albums, and just how far one groupie went to meet him.
Check out 10 things we learned about Maxwell on The Breakfast Club on the following pages.

1. Time Off
He takes lengthy breaks from the game to keep himself grounded, humble, and never forget that guy that rode the train to high school. He doesn’t want to get lost in the glitz and glamour of the fame.

2. Music
In today’s social media age where people feel they know one another without even talking personally, Maxwell feels that music is the last thing that connects people.

3. Being Black
Sometimes he didn’t feel Black enough as the man with a Puerto Rican father and Haitian mother grew up dealing with “light skinned problems.”

4. Neo-Soul Controller
Even though Maxwell’s fans say he’s the man behind the Neo-Soul genre, he credits D’Angelo as the founder of Neo-Soul.

5. Nas
He feels that Nas represents the kind of role model African-Americans should look up to.

6. Alicia Keys
He knew Alicia Keys when she was 15 and signed to Columbia before she left for J Records. Columbia really dropped the ball on that one.

8. R. Kelly
He doesn’t like singing records written by other people but made an exception for “Fortunate” because he respects how R. Kelly could “piss out a record.” His words, no one else’s.

9. The Afro
Maxwell got rid of the signature fro because he didn’t want to be just a “look” or a “haircut.” He was probably right as some women still mourn that wig piece, man.

10. Groupie Love
A woman once claimed to have cancer just so he would go see her (which he did). He now says he’s too old for groupie situations. Many men his age would beg to differ, but to each his own.
