Omar Mateen, the shooter behind the Orlando Pulse nightclub tragedy, was allegedly gay according to new developments. Accounts from Pulse club goers, former classmates, and even Mateen’s ex-wife seemingly suggest that the gunman was struggling with his identity.

Although it has been widely reported that Mateen claimed ties to the terrorist group ISIS, with the group also claiming the attack in their favor, there might be some new concerns raised by way of a local paper’s report. The Palm Beach Post spoke with one of Mateen’s former police academy classmates who said the gunman asked him out on a date.

From the Palm Beach Post:

The classmate said that he, Mateen and other classmates would hang out, sometimes going to gay nightclubs, after classes at the Indian River Community College police academy. He said Mateen asked him out romantically.

“We went to a few gay bars with him, and I was not out at the time, so I declined his offer,” the former classmate said. He asked that his name not be used.

He believed Mateen was gay, but not open about it. Mateen was awkward, and for a while the classmate and the rest in the group of friends felt sorry for him.

In an exclusive  interview with SBT Brasil, Mateen’s ex-wife doubled down on calling her ex-husband unstable and added that he exhibited “gay tendencies.”

Al Jazeera published a report today that featured accounts from Pulse attendees who say they’ve seen Mateen inside the establishment.
