A Martin Scorsese film about the origin of Batman’s greatest foe, the Joker? That’s the plan.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. and DC are in trying to finesse spinoff movie, with the Todd Phillips (The Hangover) to co-write a script with Scott Silver (8 Mile). Phillips will reportedly direct the while he and Martin Scorsese will also serve as producers.

Thankfully, Jared Leto will not be reprising his role as the Joker in the travesty that was Suicide Squad. Leto will be back for its sequel (and may redeem himself), though.

Here’s another interesting tidbit from Deadline‘s scoop:

The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy. I’m told that Phillips and Silver are writing already, but there is nothing firm on where this will fit into the DC schedule.

This can either go really well or really bad. No in between.
