For the past few years, Atlantic Records recording artist Lizzo has been quietly making a name for herself in the music game and if you haven’t heard of her yet don’t worry, you will soon enough.
Today the “Truth Hurts” singer (not to be confused with Aftermath’s 00’s singer Truth Hurts) swung through The Breakfast Club to get better acquainted with the Charlamagne Tha God, Angela Yee and DJ Envy and talk about the beauty in the struggle that brought her to stardom.
From telling the morning trio about her days being homeless to explaining her happiness in her full figured form, Lizzo comes across as the kind of positive and confidant person we should all strive to be.
Here are the 8 things we learned from Lizzo on The Breakfast Club.
1. Flute Killer
In school she was considered a “band nerd” because she was known to play the flute. We mean a real musical flute, not that other “flute.” Get your minds out the gutter. She does say she’s good with her mouth though so make of that what you will.
2. Missy Elliott
Lizzo says that Missy was a huge inspiration for her after watching her take home Grammy awards. I was like “You know what, she can do it. She’s a weird Black girl, I’m a weird Black girl.” Now all these years later she and Missy have collaborated for Lizzo’s latest project. Dreams do come true, y’all.
3. Irreplacable
As far as relationships go, Lizzo admits to “jumping to extremes” if she feels that her expectations aren’t going the way she expected them to go and will dead someone right on the spot and call on the next man in his face. Lizzo giving speed dating a whole new meaning.
4. No Fear
For her role in the upcoming movie Hustlers, Lizzo plays a stripper and though she doesn’t get naked she says she had no problem popping out a t*tty at any given moment. She was told it wasn’t necessary though but admits “I’m TMI.” And even though she’s in Playboy she says she’s “super covered up” in that too.”
5. Mental Health
Lizzo is the baby of her family and doesn’t have a problem admitting that she goes to therapy to deal with the mental strain that comes with her newfound fame. After almost having a mental breakdown before one of her shows she decided to invest in her mental health and get therapy. Good for her.
6. Prince
Lizzo had the rare honor to work with Prince before he passed away and collaborated with him on “Boy Trouble” off the Plectrumelectrum project. Props. Unfortunately she didn’t get to be in the studio with him as just called in on their studio session. Still, that’s a memory to cherish.
7. Homeless
Lizzo says she went homeless at 21 after her parents moved away from Houston where she stood behind. Aside from losing her car and getting evicted from her apartment, she says she also lost her job after her father passed away. She ended up crashing at her band-mates places, 24 Hour Fitness, and living in a banged up Subaru.
8. I’m The Bomb
While haters might say negative things about her weight she says she’s the most beautiful she’s ever been. Just for context she was 80 pounds lighter when she was homeless so if she feels at her Super Saiyan self now then don’t even try to bring her down cause you’ll just be playing yaself.
