Ronald Poppo, the homeless man who had portions of his face eaten by Rudy Eugene, opened up about the puzzling attack. In a July police interview obtained by Miami’s CBS4 Wednesday (Aug. 8), Poppo recounted the day that Eugene attacked him, revealing that the 31-year-old was speaking strangely. “He must have been souped up on something,” Poppo told authorities after revealing that Eugene stated that they were both going to die.

Although it was initially believed that Eugene was high on synthetic bath salts when he carried out the act, toxicology reports only revealed traces of Marijuana in his system. Cops shot and killed Eugene when he refused to stop eating Poppo’s face.

Now blind, 65-year-old Poppo offered no insight into why he was singled out by Eugene, in his graphic detail of the incident. “He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically that’s all there is to say about it,” he said. “He mashed my face into the sidewalk. My face is all bent and mashed up. My eyes, my eyes got plucked out. He was strangling me in wrestling holds at the same time he was plucking my eyes out.”

Poppo has undergone several reconstructive surgeries since the attack.

“For a very short amount of time I thought he was a good guy,” he said of Eugene. “But he just went and turned berserk. He apparently didn’t have a good day at the Beach and he – he was coming back. And I guess he took it out, took it out on me or something. I don’t know.”

Eugene was also upset about not being able to “score” drugs in the area, and previously accused Poppo of stealing his bible.
