Navy To Launch Ship Honoring Civil Rights Icon

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Officials within the armed forces and civilians alike are celebrating the construction of a new ship within America's naval fleet.

Jackson, Mississippi bore witness to a unique moment in history, with Navy brass and local officials all celebrating the commission of the USNS Medgar Evers.

Named to honor the legendary civil rights hero turned martyr, the ship is a T-AKE supply ship, making it an integral part of was efforts in both theaters.

Held at the Fannie Lou Hamer Institute on Citizenship and Democracy on the campus of Jackson State University, several dignitaries were on hand to celebrate the momentous occasion, including Mrs. Myrlie Evers-Williams, Medgar Evars widow. Congressman Bennie Thompson, Mayor of Jackson Harvey Johnson, and former Mississippi Governor William Winter were also present for the presentation.

T-AKE model ships have traditionally been named after Americans that embody the dreams and ideals that shape the American spirit, with distinguished Americans such as Carl Brashear, Sacagawea, and Amelia Earhart all garnering ships in their honor.

Medgar Evers was a prolific civil rights activist and member of the NAACP. He was assassinated by the coward Byron De La Beckwith, a member of the White Citizens Council and the Ku Klux Klan.

Morehouse Bans Sagging Pants, Headwear and Women's Clothes

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Students at Morehouse College are being held to a higher standard. The administration is preparing to enact a dress code later this month. According to the college's newspaper, the Maroon Tiger, the dress code is formally called the ‘Appropriate Attire Policy.' The new way of dress is set to enforce the president of the college, Dr. Robert Franklin's idea of a “Renaissance Man” as presented during one of his speeches.

Included in the policy are 11 new rules including no sagging pants, no headwear and the most amusing request of  all, no women's clothing. The policy will be distributed online via the school website and in the student handbook.

As previously reported, a prolific 11-year-old  named Jonathan McCoy worked with campus administration on the dress code and elimination of the use of the n-word on campus.

As a Hampton University graduate where our dress code prohibited sagging pants, du rags, white tees and baseball caps I applaud Morehouse for taking a stand. Dress codes hold students to a higher standard and while their policy is less strict that my Alma Mater's I think it's a good idea.
