Darius Rucker Makes History At The CMAs

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Fans of the 90's music scene have known about Darius Rucker for quite some time.

Loved by many as the man known as “Hootie” from his days as the front man for classic 90's alternative rock band Hootie and the Blowfish, Rucker is now paving a way for himself in an entirely different musical lane after being awarded the Country Music Association Awards honor for best new artist.

His album, Learn to Live, sold more that one million copies, affording Rucker the honor of being the first Black singer to win the award at the CMAA's.

His historic accomplishment puts him in the company of the legendary Charley Pride, the only other Black singer to win a major individual award.

Langston Hughes fans will be happy to know that his childhood home has been saved from its impending doom.

Fairfax Renaissance Development Corporation purchased the 2 ½ story home from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the whopping price on $100. The organization is planning to either renovate the woods-framed domicile into a museum that would spotlight the personal and professional life of the legendary writer and poet, or turn it into residential property.

It is believed that he lived in the house, located in Cleveland, during his teenage years, roughly around 1917.

“Chocolate Santa” Upsets Louisianans

Friday, November 13th, 2009

For years, students in Garyville, Louisiana have been ushering in Christmas with a visit to the “Chocolate Santa.” Unfortunately, 2009 will be  the year that the Chocolate Santa tradition ends, in a way at least.

Children at St. John's Child Development Center were given fliers about an upcoming visit from the charitable man, whom has used the Chocolate Santa name for nearly 40 years, to which parents expressed outrage. To them, there was no need for Santa to have a color; children don't see race.

“Color shouldn't matter,” said Tonia Marzilla, an angry guardian.

The superintendent of schools checked into the issue and felt that the “statement” made by the flier was one that could not be associated with the school system.

Due to the commotion, St. John's principal is considering canceling Santa's visit.
