Percy Sutton, Lawyer For Malcom X, Dies At 89
A man close to pivotal civil rights leader, Malcolm X has died. Percy Sutton passed away Saturday for unknown reasons. Members of his family have declined comment on his death.
Born the son of a slave, Sutton served with the infamous Tuskegee Airmen before moving to Harlem where he opened a law office on 125th street where he represented X.
He also served in the New York State Assembly before becoming the highest ranking Black elected official in the state of New York after being named the Manhattan borough president.
In a statement released Saturday night, Gov. David Paterson called Sutton a mentor and “one of New York's and this nation's most influential African-American leaders.”
