Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Suspends Membership Intake
The nation’s oldest Black fraternity has decided to suspend membership intake nationwide amidst allegations of hazing. The general President of the organization, Herman “Skip” Mason Jr., announced the news to members through a letter.
According to Mason Jr., the decision was made due to “the failure of some of our members to behave honorably and with care.”
He continued on in his letter to say,
“Following my review of 2009, it became clear to me that one area that needs our immediate focus is the conduct of brothers involved in the intake process. Our process was designed with the assumption that our members would conduct themselves honorably and with care. Regretfully, in several instances, that has not occurred.
“This means that all membership intake activities shall be and are hereby suspended until further notice.”
The decision to halt intake comes just a month after a member of the fraternity at Fort Valley State University in Georgia was charged with aggravated battery after leaving a student seriously injured and hospitalized for a week.
