The 88-year-old was taken to the hospital Saturday and placed in intensive care.
A friend of the Dr. told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that he was having trouble breathing and put in intensive care as a precaution.
He is expected to be released later today.
Dr. Lowery is noted for helping lead the Montgomery bus boycott and cofounded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before becoming its third president.
