A Tribe Called Quest's Phife Dawg Preparing Solo Release
Hip-Hop legend and Tribe Called Quest lyricist Phife Dawg is blessing fans with his first solo album in ten years.
The album entitled Songs In The Key of Phife is said to feature 15 songs and three bonus tracks.
According to Phife in an interview with Okayplayer.com, he's been working on this album since last June, “recording 40 or 50 songs.”
“I got like at least 40, 50 songs but now I just want to pick the top 15 and throw in three bonus cuts. In a perfect world like Keri Hilson would say, I wouldn't mind it coming out sometime between August and November.”
The album will feature production by producers Oh No, Illmind, and former Tribe Called Quest member Ali Shaheed Muhammad, as well as his own production company, Riddim Kids, which consists of DJ Rasta Roots and up-and-coming beatmaker Stat Box.
Phife also hopes to collaborate with vets DJ Scratch, Rico Wade of Organized Noise and KRS-One before finalizing the project.
In addition to his new album, Phife is also in the process of a talk show and a clothing company.
“I'm working on my own sports talk show, sports/music talk show,” Phife told Okayplayer.com. “[I am] working on a pilot for that and I think I'ma call it The Fanalyst. I'm also working on a clothing line… Well, I'm in a partnership for this clothing line called King Duce and it's also a record label that I'm partnering with. I'm gonna be head of urban music as well of head of urban wear.”
With all of his upcoming projects and the prospect of his re-emergence, Phife's return to the game couldn't have come at a better time.
According to published reports, actor/director Michael Rapaport has been working with Queens Bred emcee Nas for the past two years and fans are finally going to get a chance to see the long awaited A Tribe Called Quest documentary, “Beats, Rhymes and Life” sometime this year.
